Restoring Lost Voices

In 2026, the festival will adopt Restoring Lost Voices as its annual theme, with a particular focus on musical works of the 20th century that were overshadowed or forgotten due to war, exile, and historical upheaval.

The festival will collaborate with institutions related to exile music research at the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, and will establish the Exilarte Special Award / Exilarte Sonderpreis to encourage young musicians to rediscover and perform works by Austrian composers in exile.

The Autumn Season focuses on the Exilarte cooperation and the theme “20 Years of Restoring Lost Voices.” The programme is connected with the Exilarte Zentrum at the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and marks the 20th anniversary context of Exilarte in 2026. The season also includes the Exilarte Special Award Winners’ Concert, offering outstanding young musicians further opportunities to perform in Vienna.
